Hip Surgery Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I am a candidate for private hip surgery?

If surgery has been recommended for your hip condition — or if you are experiencing significant pain, stiffness, or loss of mobility affecting your daily life — please contact our team to arrange a consultation. Our surgeons assess patients across a range of hip conditions, from femoroacetabular impingement and labral tears to advanced osteoarthritis. Your surgeon will provide a clear, honest recommendation based on your imaging and history.

Our team works to make the path to surgery as straightforward as possible. From your first contact, we screen for any factors that would affect your suitability and keep you informed at every step. In most cases, a surgical date can be scheduled early in the process while pre-operative requirements are completed in parallel — so you are not waiting longer than necessary. Before surgery, your file is reviewed by an anaesthesiologist and any required pre-operative testing is completed to confirm it is safe to proceed. Our team coordinates all of this on your behalf and guides you through the process from start to finish.

For orthopaedic consultations, we generally require current X-rays of the affected area. In some cases, advanced imaging such as an MRI may also be needed to provide your orthopaedic surgeon with a complete picture before your consultation. If additional imaging is required, our team will walk you through exactly what is needed and can arrange private imaging in a timely fashion — so this does not become a barrier to moving forward. Please bring any imaging you already have when you contact us, and our team will confirm whether anything further is required.

Many hip procedures are performed on a day surgery basis. For hip replacement, a one to two night stay may be included in your fee depending on the facility and your individual circumstances. Your surgeon will confirm what to expect during your consultation.

Gateway Surgery supports patients from across Canada, and we are committed to making the full experience — from your first consultation through to recovery — as seamless as possible regardless of where you live. For patients travelling for hip surgery, we account for post-operative mobility requirements from the outset — including wheelchair and mobility aid coordination, accessible accommodation, and ground transportation suited to your needs. For patients who need to travel for their procedure, we connect you with our partner travel agent at no additional cost to you. They can assist with flight and hotel options, ground transportation, and mobility assistance where needed. Travel and accommodation costs are the patient's responsibility, but having dedicated support to coordinate the logistics makes a significant difference. Following your procedure, our national surgeon network means that local follow-up support is available in your home province for many procedures — so your care does not end when you leave.

Virtual follow-up appointments with your surgeon are available throughout your recovery, so distance is not a barrier to ongoing care. For many procedures, Gateway Surgery's national surgeon network also provides local support in your home province, ensuring continuity of care close to home. Physiotherapy and rehabilitation can be coordinated through Gateway Surgery or at a provider of your choice.

Every Gateway Surgery patient has access to our dedicated after hours nursing support line, available seven days a week throughout their recovery. What makes this service genuinely different is that our nursing team works in close collaboration with your surgeon — they know your procedure, your care plan, and your individual circumstances. Whether you have a question about your wound, your medications, or how your recovery is progressing, you have direct access to clinical support from a team that is closely connected to your surgeon and familiar with your care. Peace of mind after surgery is part of the care we provide.

Your wellbeing does not end at discharge. Every Gateway Surgery patient has access to our after hours nursing support line, staffed seven days a week by nurses who work in close collaboration with your surgical team. If you have a concern during your recovery — about your wound, your pain levels, or anything that does not feel right — our team is a phone call away and equipped to advise you appropriately. For any urgent concerns, emergency services remain available to you at all times. Gateway Surgery's post-operative support is designed to ensure that questions are answered promptly and that you always know where to turn.

Gateway Surgery provides privately funded surgical services. Fees are the patient's responsibility. Depending on your plan, your extended health benefits, personal health insurance, or other coverage programs may reimburse a portion of the costs associated with your hip procedure. We recommend confirming your coverage directly with your provider before booking. Our administrative team can provide detailed cost documentation to support any submission. Please contact us to receive a personalized quote.

Yes. Gateway Surgery offers financing options to help make private surgical care more accessible. Please contact our team to discuss the options available to you and find a plan that fits your situation.

Many patients are able to move from first contact to consultation to surgery within a matter of weeks. Timelines depend on your procedure, medical readiness, and surgeon availability, and we work to keep every step of the process moving efficiently. We provide a clear, personalized timeline early in the process so you can plan accordingly.

Hip surgery is a well-established procedure with a strong safety record when performed by an experienced orthopaedic surgeon. Potential risks include infection, blood clots, nerve or blood vessel injury, implant-related complications for replacement procedures, and persistent pain or stiffness. Your surgeon reviews your individual risk profile thoroughly during consultation and implements preventative protocols before, during, and after surgery.
