
Dr. James Ardell is a dual fellowship–trained orthopaedic surgeon specializing in Orthopaedic Trauma and Adult Hip and Knee Reconstruction. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Surgery at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, and an attending orthopaedic surgeon at the Rockyview General Hospital.
Raised on a farm in Saskatchewan, Dr. Ardell takes pride in his rural roots and the values that shaped his commitment to patient-centered care. He completed both his medical degree and Orthopaedic Surgery residency at the University of Saskatchewan.
Dr. Ardell completed advanced fellowship training in Orthopaedic Trauma at Vancouver General Hospital, gaining extensive experience in the management of complex fractures and polytrauma. He then pursued a fellowship in Adult Orthopaedic Reconstruction at The Ottawa Hospital, with a focus on primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty. His training also included significant experience with the direct anterior approach to hip replacement and outpatient (same-day) hip and knee arthroplasty.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Ardell is actively involved in teaching medical students, orthopaedic residents, and arthroplasty fellows. He has received multiple awards for his contributions to education and research and also serves as an Examiner in Orthopaedics for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
