Chronic back or neck pain can take a toll on every part of your life—from work and movement to rest and recreation. At Gateway Surgery, we recognize how important it is to find specialized care that’s aligned with your health goals and personal needs.

We’re pleased to introduce Dr. Michael Spiess, a fellowship-trained orthopaedic spine surgeon who provides evidence-based care to patients across Canada.

With advanced training and a thoughtful, patient-centered approach, Dr. Spiess treats a wide range of spinal conditions, from herniated discs and nerve compression to spinal instability and fractures. He works closely with each patient to understand their condition and offer clear, personalized recommendations that support long-term mobility and quality of life.

Advanced Training in Spine Surgery

Dr. Spiess earned his Doctor of Medicine (MD) from the University of Calgary in 2007. He completed his Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at the University of Saskatchewan, followed by a Combined Orthopaedic/Neurosurgery Spine Fellowship at the University of Calgary in 2013—one of the most comprehensive spine programs in the country. Since that time, Dr. Spiess has practiced in Saskatoon, SK and dedicated his practice to complex adult spine surgery with extensive experience in degenerative, deformity, trauma, tumor and minimally-invasive surgery at all levels of the spine.  As the Medical Director of the Saskatchewan Surgicentre Inc., he has played a pivotal role in pioneering a variety of outpatient spine surgeries at this fully accredited Non-Hospital Treatment Facility, including lumbar laminectomy/discectomy, anterior cervical decompression and fusion (ACDF), cervical disc arthroplasty (CDA) and posterior cervical foraminotomy.

With extensive training in both surgical and non-surgical spine care, Dr. Spiess brings a deep understanding of spinal anatomy and biomechanics to every case. His treatment plans are designed to relieve pain, restore function, and help patients return to the activities that matter most.

Spine Conditions Treated

Back and neck pain affects people of all ages and activity levels. Dr. Spiess sees patients from across Canada who are dealing with conditions such as:

  • Chronic back or neck pain
  • Herniated or slipped discs
  • Cervical stenosis (narrowing and compression of cervical nerves in neck)
  • Lumbar stenosis (narrowing and compression of lumbar nerves in lower back)
  • Sciatica and nerve compression
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Spondylolisthesis (slipped vertebra)
  • Spinal fractures

Many patients have tried treatments like physical therapy, medication, or injections without lasting relief. Others are newly diagnosed and exploring their options. Wherever you are in your spine health journey, Dr. Spiess provides guidance and expert care tailored to your needs.

What to Expect from Your Consultation

At Gateway Surgery, we believe great care starts with great communication. When you meet with Dr. Spiess, you can expect:

  • A detailed review of your medical history and symptoms
  • Advanced diagnostic imaging, when appropriate
  • A clear explanation of your condition and treatment options
  • An open conversation about the potential benefits and risks of surgery
  • Ongoing support before, during, and after treatment

Dr. Spiess works collaboratively with physiotherapists, pain specialists, and primary care providers to ensure that each patient receives well-rounded, coordinated care.

Spine Surgery and Conservative Treatment Options

While surgery can be transformative for some patients, it’s not always the first or only answer.

Dr. Spiess considers all avenues of care, beginning with the least invasive options available. His areas of expertise include:

Non-Surgical Treatments

→ Physical therapy and exercise-based rehabilitation
→ Pain management strategies, including medications and injections
→ Lifestyle and activity modifications

Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery

For eligible patients, minimally invasive techniques may offer:
→ Smaller incisions
→ Less tissue disruption
→ Faster recovery and reduced postoperative pain

Common Spine Procedures Include:

  • Anterior Cervical Decompression and Fusion (ACDF)
  • Anterior Cervical Disc Replacement
  • Lumbar decompression (or laminectomy)
  • Lumbar discectomy
  • Posterior cervical foraminotomy

No matter the treatment path, Gateway Surgery’s patients receive clear guidance, thorough education, and personalized care every step of the way. Learn more about what sets Gateway apart when it comes to private surgeries.
