What Our Patients Say

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is a good candidate for total joint replacement?

Joint replacement may be considered when arthritis, injury, or joint degeneration causes ongoing pain, stiffness, or mobility limitations that do not improve with physiotherapy, injections, or other conservative care. Through Gateway, you meet with an orthopaedic joint surgeon who reviews your imaging and medical history to determine if hip, knee, or shoulder replacement is an appropriate option.

Treatment options depend on which joint is affected and the extent of damage. Common procedures include total hip replacement, total knee replacement, partial knee replacement, reverse or total shoulder replacement, and hip resurfacing for select candidates. Your joint replacement specialist will recommend a procedure based on your diagnosis, activity level, and long-term needs.

Recovery timelines vary depending on the procedure and the joint involved. Many patients begin early, guided movement to support mobility and joint function, followed by gradual strengthening and activity progression. Physiotherapy is often recommended as part of a safe return to daily movement. With private orthopaedic surgery, your recovery pathway can be coordinated to ensure clear guidance before and after your procedure.

All surgeries carry some risk, though complications are uncommon. Possible risks may include infection, blood clots, implant complications, joint stiffness, nerve injury, or reactions to anesthesia. Your surgeon will review the potential risks and benefits of surgery with you and help determine the safest treatment approach for your condition.

Joint problems are typically diagnosed through a combination of medical history, physical examination, and imaging such as X rays, CT scans, or MRI scans. These tests help identify arthritis, joint degeneration, structural damage, or other conditions that may require surgical treatment.

Joint replacement surgery involves removing damaged portions of a joint and replacing them with artificial components designed to restore movement, stability, and function. Depending on the joint involved, this may include hip, knee, or shoulder replacement. The goal of the procedure is to improve mobility and help patients return to daily activities with greater comfort and confidence.
