What Our Patients Say

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is a good candidate for shoulder replacement?
Shoulder replacement may be considered when joint damage leads to ongoing pain, stiffness, or limited mobility that does not improve with physiotherapy, injections, or arthroscopic treatment. During your consultation, an orthopaedic shoulder specialist will review your imaging and medical history to determine whether total or reverse shoulder replacement is appropriate.

Options depend on the condition of the joint and the rotator cuff. The most common procedures are total shoulder replacement and reverse shoulder replacement. Your private shoulder surgeon will recommend the procedure that best aligns with your diagnosis, comfort, and activity goals.

Recovery varies based on the type of replacement and your overall health. Many patients begin early, guided movement to restore mobility, followed by progressive strengthening. Physiotherapy is often recommended to support safe healing and shoulder function. With private shoulder surgery, your recovery pathway can be coordinated to ensure clear guidance before and after your procedure.
All surgeries carry some risk, though complications are uncommon. Possible risks may include infection, bleeding, joint stiffness, implant complications, nerve injury, or reactions to anesthesia. Your surgeon will review the potential risks and benefits of surgery with you and help determine the safest treatment approach for your condition.

Shoulder conditions are typically diagnosed through a combination of medical history, physical examination, and imaging such as X rays, ultrasound, or MRI scans. These tests help identify joint damage, arthritis, rotator cuff problems, or structural changes that may require surgical treatment.
Shoulder replacement surgery involves removing the damaged portions of the shoulder joint and replacing them with artificial components designed to restore joint movement and stability. Depending on the condition of the rotator cuff and joint surfaces, the surgeon may recommend either a total shoulder replacement or a reverse shoulder replacement to best restore function.
